No-Needle & No-Scalpel Vasectomy

At Gentle Procedures, our doctors carry out the Pollock Technique™, a vasectomy that uses no scalpel and no needle. A fine pressure spray numbs the skin instead of an injection, and one small opening replaces a cut. No skin stitches are needed. It is permanent contraception for adult men, done in about 15 minutes at our Birmingham clinic.

Most men return to light work within 1 to 2 days. Book a consultation to talk through whether a vasectomy suits you. If you decide to go ahead, your vasectomy can follow at the same appointment.

What a Pollock Technique™ Vasectomy Involves

A Pollock Technique™ vasectomy is permanent contraception for men. Your doctor seals the two tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. This means sperm can no longer reach your semen. It removes the two parts of a standard vasectomy that many men dread: the cut and the needle.

"No scalpel" describes how the skin is opened. Your doctor makes one small opening and gently widens it, so no external stitches are needed. The skin closes naturally. "No needle" describes the anaesthetic. A fine pressure spray numbs the skin, so no injection is needed. Inside, the doctor uses two refinements. With a double open-ended approach, the testicular end of each tube is left open, and no cautery (burning) is used. With fascial interposition, a thin layer of your own tissue is placed between the cut ends. A dissolving stitch holds it in place, so no metal clips stay inside you.

Once a semen analysis shows no sperm, a vasectomy is over 99% effective. It is meant to be permanent, so we make sure you are certain before we begin. The procedure takes about 10 minutes, and you go home the same day.

Doctors Who Specialise in Vasectomy

At Gentle Procedures, our GMC-registered doctors specialise in minor surgery and men's health. They are trained in the Pollock Technique™, and they will explain each step in plain language, including how the spray anaesthetic works. They answer any questions that men often find awkward to ask.

The doctor you meet at your consultation is the same doctor who carries out your vasectomy and supports you afterwards. If something worries you during recovery, you can call the clinic and speak to someone who understands your care.

Our Approach and What to Expect

Gentle Procedures carries out the Pollock Technique™ vasectomy at our Birmingham clinic for adult men. Your doctor numbs the skin with a fine pressure spray, then makes one small opening and gently widens it. Through that opening, the doctor reaches the two tubes that carry sperm and seals them. You stay awake throughout. Most men are ready to leave shortly afterwards, and you're given clear aftercare instructions to follow at home.

Many no-scalpel vasectomies still use a needle for the anaesthetic. The Pollock Technique™ does not. We perform it the same way each time, so you know what to expect. Your doctor explains every step at your consultation and gives you time to ask questions before anything begins.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your appointment is structured into four clear stages, so you know what will happen and why. Most appointments take around 45 to 60 minutes, giving you and your baby the time you need without feeling rushed. We are deliberately unhurried, so you can settle your baby and feel completely comfortable throughout.

01

Arrive and talk it through

Please arrive 15 minutes early. Your doctor discusses with you whether a vasectomy is suitable, explains each step and answers your questions.

02

Anaesthetic

The doctor cleans the skin and applies the anaesthetic with a fine pressure spray. You feel a brief tap, and there is no injection.

03

The procedure

The doctor makes one small opening and seals the tubes, using a double open-ended approach and fascial interposition. It takes about 15 minutes and needs no stitches in the skin.

04

Rest, aftercare and semen analysis

You’ll rest briefly, then we’ll talk you through your aftercare. Around 16 weeks after your procedure, you’ll have a semen analysis to check whether any sperm remain and to confirm that the vasectomy has been successful.

Your Comfort and What to Expect Afterwards

Two questions come up in almost every consultation: will it hurt, and what could go wrong? We answer both plainly before you decide.

Spray anaesthetic and comfort

Your doctor numbs the skin with a pressure spray instead of an injection. No needle is used at any point. Most men describe the spray as a brief tap. Once the area is numb, you should not feel sharp pain, though you may feel some tugging or pressure during the procedure. Tell your doctor at any point if something is uncomfortable, and they will pause.

Risks and support after you leave

Most men have bruising, swelling and tenderness for the first week, which eases with rest and an ice pack. A small number may develop an infection or bleeding, and a few have a tender lump or a longer ache. Occasionally, the tubes can join back up, which is why your semen analysis is important. Call the clinic if you are worried.

I honestly cannot recommend this clinic enough. My child recently had his circumcision here, and from the moment we walked through the doors, I felt completely reassured that I had made the right decision. Before choosing this clinic, I visited several others, but none of them gave me the same feeling of comfort and confidence. The team here were incredibly professional, welcoming and accommodating. They took the time to answer every question I had, no matter how small, and explained everything to me in such detail. As a parent, this meant so much to me because I never felt rushed or made to feel like I was asking too many questions. What really stood out was how confident and knowledgeable the staff were. You could tell they genuinely knew what they were doing, but at the same time, they were kind, patient and understanding. They made the whole experience feel much less daunting than I had imagined. The clinic itself was also completely different from anywhere else I had visited. It was calm, clean and welcoming, which created such a reassuring environment for both my child and me. Everything they did felt centred around the patient, and I could genuinely see that my child's comfort and wellbeing were their priority. I am especially grateful for the support they offered beyond the procedure itself. They made it clear that they were there to support us afterwards too, not simply until we left the clinic or until a follow-up appointment. Knowing that I could reach out if I had any concerns gave me so much peace of mind. As a parent, you naturally want the very best for your child, and choosing someone to carry out a procedure like this can feel like a huge decision. I am so glad I chose Gentle Procedures. I genuinely felt listened to, respected and cared for throughout the whole experience. I would recommend this clinic to every parent and honestly to every person I meet who is considering circumcision. I have never felt this level of confidence and reassurance with any other healthcare provider. A huge thank you to everyone at Gentle Procedures. You are truly amazing, and I am so grateful for the care you gave my child and the reassurance you gave me as a parent. ❤️

We have had an excellent, professional and calming experience at TGP clinic today. Being nervous parents we felt ever so calm during the process. The discussion during and post procedure was extremely clear. We were provided with postcare items and were talked through it all. It was that good we ended up chatting away in the reception forgetting our appointment was completed.Thank you ever so much for a safe procedure. Will 100% recommend.

Pollock Technique Vasectomy: Honest Answers for Men

What is the Pollock Technique™ no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomy?

This vasectomy combines needle-free local anaesthetic with no-scalpel access. A fine pressure spray delivers the anaesthetic through the skin, and the doctor makes one small opening to reach the tubes that carry sperm. Cautery is used as part of the sealing process, and no skin stitches are needed.

The lower end of each tube, on the testicular side, is left open. The upper end is cut and separated from it by a layer of tissue, so no cautery (burning) is needed. Leaving the lower end open lets sperm be reabsorbed naturally, which may ease pressure and swelling in early recovery.

The spray feels like a brief tap on the skin, and once the area is numb, you should not feel sharp pain. Some men feel tugging or pressure during the procedure. Some soreness is normal afterwards, and it should ease over the first week.

Most men return to light or desk-based work within 1 to 2 days. Avoid strenuous activity and swimming for 7 days, and wait until you feel comfortable before having sex.

No. A vasectomy does not affect erections, sex drive or how orgasm feels. You still ejaculate, and your semen looks much the same, because sperm make up only a small part of it.

You have a semen analysis about 16 weeks after your procedure to confirm there is no sperm. Use other contraception until you have the all-clear.

Reversal is sometimes possible, but it is not guaranteed and becomes less likely with time. Treat a vasectomy as permanent. If you may want children later, talk to your doctor about storing sperm first.

No. "No scalpel" describes how the skin is opened, using one small opening instead of a cut. "No needle" describes the anaesthetic and uses a pressure spray instead of an injection. Many no-scalpel vasectomies still use a needle. The Pollock Technique™ uses neither.
