Circumcision Aftercare and Recovery

Healing usually follows a clear pattern, but the steps vary slightly between babies, children and adults. Choose the relevant age group below to see the care that applies to you or your son.

If anything is unclear, call or message our team, Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.

The First 24 Hours

On the first day, the priorities are rest and keeping the dressing in place. Keep your son calm at home, leave the bandage alone and follow the written instructions from your appointment. Check his nappy hourly, as small blood spots are common.

Days 1 to 3: Early Healing

Tenderness, redness and swelling are normal while the area heals. Yellow patches are healing tissue, not pus. Follow your written cleaning and dressing steps, and call us if you're unsure about anything. Replace the square gauze and apply Vaseline at each nappy change.

Days 4 to 7: Healing Progress

Swelling and bruising slowly ease during this stage, though they can look worse before they improve. Keep following your care steps and check the area each day. Stop using the gauze after 72 hours and carry on applying Vaseline.

Days 7 to 14: Final Healing

Healing is well underway, and many babies look and feel much better by 2 weeks. Treat this as a guide, though, because every baby heals at his own pace. Gentle baths are fine now. Pat him dry and carry on using Vaseline.

Healing Beyond Two Weeks

Swelling and bruising carry on improving over several weeks. It can take a month or more to see the final result. Everyone heals differently, so we never promise fixed dates.

Bathing and Keeping the Area Clean

When you can bathe or shower again depends on your age and the technique used, so follow your aftercare sheet. Here's the general picture, so you know what to expect.

Bathing

Babies have sponge baths for 72 hours. Adults and children can shower after day 1 with the area covered.

Keeping clean

Clean gently and only use the ointment or Vaseline your guide advises.

Drying

Pat the area dry, then dress it as shown in your guide.

Returning to Normal Activities

Your doctor will confirm when each activity is right for you. Until then, keep things comfortable and avoid anything that hurts.

Nursery

Return when your child is comfortable and your doctor agrees.

School

Most boys return after a few days. Avoid strenuous play and PE.

Work

Desk jobs can restart in days. Physical jobs may need 1 to 2 weeks.

Sports

Contact sports and gym often need 4 to 6 weeks. Your doctor will confirm.

Swimming

Don't swim until the area has healed and your doctor gives the go-ahead.

Travel and holidays

Keep journeys short at first and check with us before booking longer trips.

Follow-Up and Technique-Specific Care

We'll stay in touch throughout recovery. On day 3 and day 14, you'll send us photos through a secure link we email you. The doctor reviews each set to check healing and flag anything that needs attention.

On day 7, babies and children have a video call, and adults attend an appointment where the doctor removes any Shang Ring. If you are unsure which steps apply, call our team and we'll talk it through.

Frequently Asked Questions about Circumcision Aftercare and Recovery

How long does circumcision healing take?

Many people look and feel much better by 2 weeks, with the area becoming steadily more comfortable each day. Swelling and bruising can keep settling for a month or more, and the final appearance takes time. Everyone heals at their own pace, so we never promise fixed dates. If healing worries you, don’t hesitate to call us.

Small spots or streaks of blood on the dressing, nappy or underwear are common for the first few days. A brief ooze can happen when dressings are changed, and firm pressure with clean gauze for 3 to 5 minutes usually stops it. If blood is dripping, press firmly for 20 minutes. If it continues, call us straight away.

On their own, no. The cut line often looks red, with yellow or off-white patches on top. This is healing tissue, not pus, and the redness fades to pink over time. Call us if redness spreads, swelling increases, pain gets worse, or there is a smelly discharge, because those changes need a doctor to look.

After 2 days, the bandage around the penis can fall off at any time. If it does, leave it off and do not replace it. Replace only the square gauze with fresh Vaseline as needed. This is not a cause for worry, but if you are unsure, call us, and we will talk it through.

Babies have gentle sponge cleans for 72 hours, then gentle baths, patting the area dry afterwards. Boys and men can shower after the first day if the dressing is covered and kept out of direct water. Older boys and men should wait for their doctor’s go-ahead before baths and swimming, so check your aftercare sheet.

This is common in babies with soft pubic fat, and it usually improves as they grow. It can look more noticeable while swelling settles. You should still gently press the area down for cleaning and Vaseline, as your guide shows. Call us if you cannot see the head at all once swelling has settled, or the skin seems stuck.

Erections can feel tight or sore, but they rarely cause harm. A few simple habits can reduce night-time erections. Empty the bladder just before bed, limit drinks in the evening and wear snug briefs or underwear to support the penis. If your doctor advises it, a cold pack wrapped in a cloth can ease discomfort.

Most boys and teens are ready to return after a few days, wearing supportive underwear and avoiding strenuous activity. The right time depends on how comfortable he is, with only mild soreness that improves each day. Running, football, cycling and contact games must wait until your doctor says the wound is strong, often 4 to 6 weeks.

Many men with desk jobs return after a few days, once pain is under control and walking feels steady. Heavy manual work often needs 1 to 2 weeks off. Gym, cycling and contact sport usually wait 4 to 6 weeks, and sex until the skin has fully healed, around 6 weeks. Your doctor will confirm each step.

Call us if redness spreads, swelling increases, pain gets worse or there is a smelly discharge. Also call for a dark blue, black or grey head of the penis, or no urine or wet nappies for much longer than usual. If blood keeps dripping after 20 minutes of firm pressure, call us now. If anyone is very unwell, call 999.
