This guide will take you through your recovery in stages, from the first 24 hours to your follow-up semen test. Some tenderness, swelling, and mild discomfort for the first few days are normal, and most men notice steady improvement each week.
Follow the instructions your doctor gives you at your appointment. If they differ from this page, your doctor's advice comes first. If anything is unclear, or you are worried about how you are healing, don’t hesitate to contact our team.
Our doctors recommend resting for the first day after your procedure. Go straight home, get comfortable, and give your body time to settle as the anaesthetic wears off.
Tenderness, swelling, and bruising are normal at this stage, and usually peak around day 3. Keep resting and stay on top of your pain relief.
Keep the opening clean and dry, and avoid soaking it while it heals.
Avoid baths, hot tubs, jacuzzis, or swimming pools for at least 7 days, as moisture can slow healing and cause infections. Bathing is fine from day 8 onwards.
From the next day onward, you can shower with the opening protected. Cover it with plastic wrap or a waterproof cover, and keep it away from direct water pressure. You can shower as normal from day 7.
Pat the area dry gently, and use gentle soap and water if you need to. Avoid ointments unless your doctor has recommended them. Any skin glue will flake off by itself over 1 to 3 days. Let us know if the edges of the opening start to come apart.
Tell your doctor about your usual routine. They can recommend a timeline for safely easing back into your normal activities. Until you have fully recovered, it’s best to keep things comfortable and stop any activity that causes you pain.
Sperm can remain in your tubes after your vasectomy, so it does not make you sterile straight away. Pregnancy is still a possibility until we can confirm your result.
We carry out a simple semen test to confirm whether or not your vasectomy has worked. We will send you your test results as soon as they are ready.
Some changes are part of normal healing, and some need our advice. Here is how to tell them apart.
Some discomfort is normal while you heal, and it normally eases a little more each day. Bruising typically fades from a blue-black colour to yellow-green over 7 to 10 days, and swelling will gradually fade. The opening will typically be red at first, then forms a yellow or green healing crust. You may feel a pea-sized lump near the opening, which may be tender for a few weeks before it shrinks. For the first month or two, you may notice some blood in your semen or urine.
From day 3 onward, call us if your pain gets worse or does not ease with paracetamol or ibuprofen, if your swelling increases, or if you experience new, sudden tension on one side. Let us know right away if you experience new bleeding after the first 48 hours, growing redness or heat, pus, or a foul smell from the opening. A quick call is better than waiting and worrying, so please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Call us straight away if you experience bleeding that continues to soak your dressing despite applying firm pressure for 10 minutes, or if you notice fresh dripping after day 2. Get urgent help if you develop a fever of 38°C or more with chills, or if you feel unwell and have scrotal pain or swelling. Immediate care is needed if you cannot pass urine for 8 to 12 hours, if a testicle suddenly becomes tense, hard or painful or if you notice sudden numbness or dark blue, black or grey skin on your scrotum.
We are here to support you throughout your recovery. Contact us whenever you have a question or a concern.
Your go-home instructions include an out-of-hours doctor contact. Use it if you need urgent advice when the clinic is closed.
Most men experience a mild to moderate ache, like a knock to the testicles. This typically lasts around 7 days and eases with rest and simple pain relief, but it can last for up to a few weeks for some men. By the end of week 1, this discomfort should feel like mild soreness rather than sharp pain.
Yes. Swelling is usually most noticeable around day 3, and bruising may look blue-black. Most of this swelling should ease by day 7, and any bruising will usually fade to a yellow-green colour. Call us if your scrotum turns dark blue, black, or grey, or if your swelling increases suddenly.
You can shower from day 2 onward if you cover the opening with plastic wrap or a waterproof cover. By day 7 you can usually shower as normal, and by day 8 you can usually bathe. Avoid baths, hot tubs, jacuzzis, and swimming pools for at least 7 days.
Wait 7 full days before having sex or ejaculating to let the opening heal. Keep using condoms or another form of contraception after this until we can confirm your semen test result.
Wait until we confirm that your semen sample is clear before you stop using birth control. Sperm can remain in your system for around 3 to 5 months after a vasectomy. Pregnancy is still possible until we can confirm that your procedure was effective.
After around 7 days, ejaculating can help to clear any remaining sperm from your tubes. We recommend ejaculating at least 20 times before you give your sample. Fewer ejaculations can cause some sperm to show up in your sample, and you may need to repeat your test. Avoid having sex or ejaculating for 2 to 5 days before you collect your sample.
Call us straight away if you experience bleeding that soaks your dressing despite applying firm pressure to the area for 10 minutes. Tell us straight away if you develop a temperature above 38°C with scrotal pain or swelling, if you cannot pass urine for 8 to 12 hours, or if one of your testicles suddenly becomes tense, hard, or painful.
