A no-scalpel vasectomy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure offering permanent male contraception with faster healing and minimal discomfort. Performed under local anaesthetic, it requires no stitches and allows most men to return quickly to normal activities, with clear aftercare and follow-up to confirm sterility.
Choosing a permanent form of male contraception is a significant decision, and our clinic is dedicated to providing you with the safest, fastest, and most comfortable experience possible. We specialise in the no-scalpel vasectomy, an advanced technique that ensures minimal invasiveness and a quicker return to your daily life.
The No-Scalpel Advantage
A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure designed to achieve male sterility, meaning you will no longer be able to cause a pregnancy.
Â
Our clinic uses the modern no-scalpel technique, which offers several benefits:
- No Scalpel Blade Used:Â Instead of a traditional incision, the surgeon uses a specialized instrument to make a tiny opening, eliminating the need for a scalpel.
- Local Anesthesia:Â The procedure is performed under local anesthetic, meaning you are awake but feel no pain, which greatly enhances safety.
Â
Faster Procedure & Healing:Â The minimally invasive nature of the no-scalpel method results in a significantly faster procedure time, reduced risk, and an accelerated healing process.
Preparation and Consultation
Prior to your procedure, you will have a pre-operative consultation with a member of our surgical team.
Â
During this vital step, we will:
- Review your medical history, including any previous surgeries.
- Discuss current medications and any specific conditions, such as diabetes or blood-clotting disorders.
- Explain the procedure in detail and obtain your informed consent.
The Day of Your Vasectomy
On the day of your vasectomy:
- Please ensure you have a light breakfast.
- We recommend wearing a light T-shirt and arranging for a drive to and from the clinic.
- You will be introduced to your surgeon, and your consent will be confirmed. Our team understands that you may feel nervous, and we are committed to keeping you calm and informed by talking you through every step.
The Procedure Itself
Once the local anaesthetic is administered, the surgeon will ensure you feel no pain. The surgeon will then gently isolate the vas deferens – the tube that carries sperm – and divide it. This is performed for both the left and right sides, usually through one small opening in the scrotum. Because the opening is so minimal, no stitches are required, and the area will heal naturally.
Post-Operative Care: Your Path to Recovery
Adhering to our simple four-step post-operative advice is crucial for an optimal recovery:
- Rest: For the first three days following the operation, you must avoid heavy lifting or sports. This allows any minor swelling and inflammation to settle.
- Support: Wear supportive underwear, swimming trunks, or cycling shorts for continuous comfort.
- Analgesia: Take regular simple analgesia, such as paracetamol, even if you are not currently in pain, to proactively manage discomfort.
- ICE: Apply an ice pack to the scrotum for 15 minutes of every hour for the first six hours after the procedure.
After three days, you will be able to resume approximately 70% of your normal activities. However, we advise avoiding sport or heavy duties for a full seven days.
Confirming Sterility
Crucially, you are NOT sterile immediately after the vasectomy.
It takes time to clear any stored sperm. You must ejaculate at least 30 times over a period of four months. After this time, you will be provided with a testing pot to send a sample to our labs. Only once the analysis confirms no sperm are present can you be officially declared sterile and stop using other forms of contraception.
